Nairobi

I write this on our last morning in Nairobi. The bus to our next destination, Elsamere, departs in about 2 hours time.

We’ve been very fortunate to enjoy the company of Kevin and Dennis Gichanga during our brief time here. Kevin picked us up from the airport on Monday and took us over to the YMCA hostel in central Nairobi. We were all exhausted from the long journey, so it was a relief to be transported hassle free to our bedrooms! Kevin helped us to buy Kenyan mobile phone sim cards and took us to a pizza place for our dinner. We all crashed into bed by 7pm and slept through until 8am!

Yesterday, Dennis picked us up from the YMCA and showed us round a few sights. The most striking thing about Nairobi is how clean it is. Dennis told us that there is a ‘man eat man’ culture here in the sense that if you litter the streets it will not be long before somebody has reported it to the authorities, landing you with a very heavy fine. The result is very clean streets facilitated by an excellent waste collection service, run privately, but paid for by the government. Kevin took us to Nairobi national park, which is right on the margin of the city. We went on the ‘Safari Walk’ which stirred up my usual emotions about caged animals. While understanding the educational value of these places, I never feel that I need to see animals in small, lonely, enclosures to understand the need to conserve them.

Nairobi is very green, there are large areas of natural forest right in the centre of the city inhabited by indigenous flora and fauna and the streets are lined with towering trees (when you can see them past the huge billboards advertising mobile phones, internet providors, perfumes and TVs). Deforestation is, however, a big problem in and around Nairobi, efforts are in place to conserve these forests and Dennis was hopeful that these efforts will be successful. The fact remains however that Nairobi’s 3 million plus population is growing every day and the pressure for land grows with it. Nairobians are desperate for better roads, the number of cars has risen dramatically in the last decade, many of them are new japanese and european vehicles causing huge congestion problems and pollution. Road building has not begun in earnest here, but when it does, more areas of wildlife are sure to be divided by concrete and tarmac.

Our penultimate stop on our trip round Nairobi was at the factory of ‘Kazura’ (meaning small and beautiful). Kazura produce beads and pottery from locally sourced clay. We were shown into the factory where over 300 females work in shifts in excellent conditions to produce these beads for export around the world. We learned that the beads were sold at an outlet in Cambridge in the UK, as well as across Africa, America and Australia. Perhaps one day, we can sell these fair trade goods at Rendezvous in Cheltenham.

Following an excellent and very simple meal, we returned to the YMCA and I sat down with Dennis to discuss events that led him and his family to move to Nairobi from their hometown on Kisumu. I recorded an interview with him which will contribute to the radio documentary I’m putting together. Dennis and his family are from the Kikuyu tribe who were forced out of Kisumu during the post election violence in December 2007. It is an incredibly sad story and his family suffered terribly. With time, it seems, Dennis and his family have been able to put it behind them and he is now very settled in Nairobi and looking forward to a bright future working for Kenyan Airways.

Howard, Alice, Aby and I are all getting very excited about our Global Venture to Kisumu, Cheltenham’s friendship link town in Kenya. We’ll be leaving on Sunday on a flight to Nairobi, where we’ll spend two nights at the YMCA. From there we will move on to the Elsamere Centre in the Great Rift Valley for four nights. It will then be on to Kisumu for 10 days of cultural linking! With a bit of luck I’ll be able to update this blog regularly with stories, photos and videos so that you can see what we are up to! Below is an outline of what each of us will be getting up to while we are there.

Aby Morley

Aby is an art student here in Cheltenham , she is very interested in crafts, particularly ‘jua kali’ and would very much like to swap skills with local craftspeople in Kisumu. She, with Alice, will be responsible for purchasing handmade jewellery and crafts for sale at Rendezvous.

Alice Matthews

Alice is the same age as Aby and is currently taking a ‘gap’ year after finishing school. She will start a degree in Education in September. Alice is keen to visit local schools, she, along with myself and the others will be very happy to talk to the children about life in the UK. We would all love to visit all types of school.

Howard Marshall

  1. Establish Ethnic and Faith Reflection of Kisumu.
  2. Find out the effects on Kisumu since US election of Barrack Obama to the White House.
  3. Take official Letters of Greetings from Civic Officials in Cheltenham such as the Town’s Mayor, Member of Parliament and Chairman of Twinning to the Mayor of Kisumu.
  4. Re establish links with St. Lukes Anglican Church and promote awareness of St. Gregorys Roman Catholic Church in Kisumu, with the RC community here in Cheltenham.
  5. Find out if either of these churches have connections with schools.
  6. To contact both St. Johns Primary School (St. Lukes Link) and St. Gregorys RC School with a view to input from their pupils that I can take to Kisumu. Take letters of greeting from their Head Teachers.
  7. Visit the above Churches and Schools in Kisumu.
  8. Establish how we can help the above in furthering their aims and objectives with links with Gloucestershire.

Morgan Phillips

My main role will be to ensure that as much as possible of the above happens smoothly.

I will also be promoting our next footsteps conference: Footstep 12 in Cadca, Slovakia (August 2010). I am hoping to meet and interview potential participants. To do this I will be visiting schools, universities and cultural centres to find suitable candidates.

I am hoping to meet some environmentalists to discuss environmental issues affecting Kenya, especially the impacts of Climate Change.

I will be working with Cadif Kenya http://www.cadifkenya.interconnection.org/ to help them with funding and volunteers.

We will also be making a film and radio programme to document our experiences.

Sule Tomkinson in India

Sule Tomkinson is probably better know as Sule Bayrak to Footsteppers from Footstep 11, she is now married, we wish her many congratulations! She is currently in India involved in a very interesting project, we are delighted to hear from her…

After receiving my MA degree in human rights from the University of Essex I turned back to Istanbul, Turkey and worked in a job which is not related to human rights at all just to make a living. However, I did not feel satisfied with my life and what I was doing at all. This was followed by quitting my job in July 2008 and my marriage in August 2008. – My husband is Canadian and I met him 3 weeks after I turned back from Global Footsteps Jamaica conference in a club in London – My husband is Canadian and while waiting for my permanent residency status to Canada a research fund in child rights came to my knowledge by United Kingdom – India Education and Research Initiative. I got the scholarship and doing a research in different parts of India from early May to July. I basically meet with different human rights organisations that work on child marriages and try to communicate with child brides and try to understand the reasons that forced them to marriage.

It is the case that many children in parts of the developing world are forced to marriage. Some of these marriages originate in poverty, some out of a need to protect family honour, and some in order to provide stability during unstable social periods. If we exclude China, one in seven girls gets married before the age of 15 in the developing countries. This rate indicates the severity of the problem. Despite the fact that the child marriages affect both girls and boys in India, the child brides are far larger in numbers and impacts of the marriage on them constitute more serious human rights violations.

Today, 6.4 million Indian girls under the age of 18 are married and 130.000 are widowed. Nationwide, 24 percent of 20-24 years-old girls are married by age 15, whereas 50 percent are married by age 18. The parliament of India adopted the Child Marriage Restraint Act in 1978, thereby setting 21 as minimum age for men and 18 for women respectively. But small fines and short periods of imprisonment for the men who married young girls were not able to stop the practice.

The outcomes of marriages of young girls are the following: First of all, the denial of the right to education both denies the development of female children and forces them into a marriage with economic dependence. Secondly, young girls are hardly knowledgeable on reproductive health since most of them do not attend the secondary education where the sexuality education is given. Further, young girls’ bodies are not ready biologically to conceive a child that results in high infant and maternal mortality rates and they are more exposed to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS because of lack of sexual education. According to a research conducted in Karnataka, India 85 percent of girls conceive during the first year of their marriage. Finally, the married young girls experience physical, emotional and psychological exploitation as well as isolation.

Child marriage is a very sensitive issue and law alone is not enough to solve it since the idea of marrying one’s daughter before puberty is entrenched in rural culture. The police and child marriage prevention officers generally do not intervene to mass marriage ceremonies which take place during certain festivals. The statistics show that child marriage is especially related with poverty and non-education. What is more, women do not have a voice in marrying their children male dominance continues to reproduce this structure again and again. Girl child finds herself trapped in a vicious circle for the whole of her life. In order to solve this problem, it is very significant that the state control is tightened on child marriage issues, and all marriages should be registered. The continuation of education for the girl child should be provided as well as mechanisms to not find herself trapped in a so called marriage.

HRA Foundation / Curry With Love

Global Footsteps is partnered with a Bangladeshi Community Capacity building project called The HRA Foundation. It has recently run into difficulties, Global Footsteps director Morgan Phillips has written a report outlining the problems and is trying to raise awareness and support. This message is currently being sent out to journalists:

The HRA Foundation, a community capacity building project based in the Bishwanath sub-district of Sylhet, Bangladesh, has been forcefully and illegally closed down by powerful and self-interested local members of the ruling Awami League Political Party. The Awami League promised in its recent election manifesto, Vision 2021, that it is ‘committed to freeing Bangladesh from its current state of crisis and building a country whose citizens are able to live prosperous and happy lives’.

The HRA Foundation was set up along very similar principles to the Vision 2021, it is supported by UK partners The Rendezvous Society (UK registered charity: 293357) and Martin Horwood MP (Cheltenham, Lib Dem). Its closure clearly contradicts Awami League promises and is an example of the political obstacles standing in the way of economic and social development in Bangladesh. Awami League public representatives with dual Bangladesh and British citizenship are implicated by their non action. They have thus far failed to attempt any arbitration and have willingly and very wrongfully painted the closure of the foundation as a simple family feud over property rights. The reasons for its initial closure were due to disagreements at a micro level, its continued closure highlights worrying truths about the Awami League at a macro level.

The HRA foundation was founded by Arosh Ali and is financed purely by the Curry With Love Bangladeshi takeaway and delivery service in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Running off to join the Circus!

Anesta Mathurin was a participant at Footstep 11 in Jamaica. She has just sent us an update on what she’s going to do this summer after finishing her University degree…

Today I’m actually revising for my final uni exam, tomorrow, which means this time tomorrow my degree will be complete and I’ll be celebrating! Thursday I’m moving out of my house up here (Birmingham) and going back to Gloucester for one night. Then on friday I’m off to join a travelling circus school (seriously!). Until October I’ll be travelling with them, training circus skills and performing several times a week aswell. I’m going to try and take loads of photos while I’m in the circus and when we have afternoons off, try to find places with internet access so I can upload them to facebook, so hopefully some people can see them on there!

This photo of Anesta displaying her circus skills was taken on her recent family holiday to St Lucia… I was in St Lucia in December – thats where my Dad’s family is from. That was really cool and it was a family holiday. St Lucia is just as beautiful as Jamaica, but with its own charm as well.

So keep an eye out for the circus in your town, Anesta might just be there on the high wire!

Experiences in Great Britain by Jana Eyssel

In February and March this year Jana Eyssel from Gottingen visited the UK on a Global Venture. We have just published her full report, below is an extract discussing her experiences in Great Britain.

Experiences in Great Britain

I will focus here on cultural experiences I made during my stay and cultural differences I noticed. However, I will not mention every difference I observed. British and German cultures are similar, but there are nevertheless countless small differences, which are too small to be mentioned here. I will only write about differences that are important to the theme of environment, except one.

Traffic

The first important difference I noticed was the organization of the traffic. At least in Cheltenham bikes do not seem to play an important role as means of transportation. In three weeks I counted about 40 bikers – a number I could count in Leipzig in one day. However, using a bike is much more dangerous in Cheltenham than in most German cities because there are mostly no cycle paths or only very narrow ones. In Germany, normal cycle paths are about 1 meter wide. In addition, cars seem to rule the streets not only over bicycles, but also over pedestrians. In Germany, pedestrians mostly have the priority on the streets. In Great Britain this does not seem to be the case. This becomes obvious by having a look at the organizations of the traffic lights. Cars always have green light, whereas pedestrians have to wait very long for their green light, which after a very short time turns to red again. Therefore every road to cross becomes an obstacle for a pedestrian, especially for elderly people who cannot walk fast enough to cross the street in the time of the green light. Besides the traffic lights, also other aspects demonstrate the general acceptance of cars. Being the liveliest and the most important part of Cheltenham, the city centre is fully accessible by car. There are not only large parking places built near the town centre, which encourages people to go by car to do their shopping, there are also several roads cutting through the pedestrian area. Even here pedestrians have to wait a long time for being able cross the streets. This all shows that the local politics is not willing to diminish traffic but is making Cheltenham a very car-friendly place. In my opinion this is a very negative aspect, because of traffic’s important role in air pollution. Other reasons are noise pollution, danger of accidents and health problems.

Organic and Fair Trade Products

In Great Britain, fair trade products are much more common than in Germany. Here in Germany, it is very rare to find those products in ‘normal’ shops, for instance in supermarkets. And if there are some fair trade goods, the range of products in general is limited to bananas, chocolate and coffee. Only world shops and some wholefood shops provide the customers with a wider array of fair trade products. In public, the importance of fair trade is not very present. In my opinion, people do only see that they can influence the lives of a very limited group of farmers in a certain place in a developing country. The global importance and the influence on global economy, politics, justice and the environment unfortunately are not recognized in Germany.

However, it seems to be the other way round with organic food. I hardly saw any organically grown products in supermarkets and the number of wholefood shops is very small in Cheltenham. In Germany, there are many small wholefood stores and nearly every supermarket chain has its own organic food brand. However, these big food brands undermine the idea of organic food in a way. Originally, organic food meant locally and organically grown, seasonal food, which came from small farms. Now, supermarkets produce their organic food industrially and often in distant countries. This makes organic food cheaper and makes it available for a greater group of people. I personally see a problem in this industrialized organic food. In my opinion, it cannot be called organic food anymore. There are different standards for organic food in Germany, which are symbolized by different seals displayed on the products. The standard regulations, which are used the most, above all for organic products in supermarkets, are lower than others. Those products, which are subject to stricter regulations, are mostly sold in smaller shops. They are more expensive because producing them on a high level of quality costs a lot of money and because they are mostly produced locally, where the loans for the workers are much higher than in other countries.

I had the impression, that the importance of organic food is not fully recognized in Great Britain. On the one hand, the consumer benefits from buying organic food. It normally is healthier due to the lack of chemicals and it tastes better. On the other hand, like fair trade products, organic food too has larger implications. Normally, organic food is better for the environment than conventionally grown food. This is again due to a much more reduced use of chemicals. When organic products are produced by local farmers, the ways of transportation are much shorter, which reduces the impact on climate change. Local farmers are being supported; they do not have to sell their goods to supermarket chains, which can lower the prices as they wish. In addition, organic food tends to be wrapped in a sparing way, so this is also a way of save resources.

Surveillance

The second aspect is very special to Great Britain. This is why I mention it although it does not concern the environment. British people are subject to a wide range of surveillance measures. According to the Liberty report “Overlooked: Surveillance and personal privacy in modern Britain”, surveillance can be divided into two main parts. The first one is mass surveillance; the second one is targeted surveillance. Mass surveillance can be divided into “mass informational surveillance” and “mass visual surveillance”.

During my stay in Britain, I mainly noticed this last category, embodied by CCTV cameras. Great Britain is the world leading country in public video surveillance. As the non-governmental organisation Liberty states on its website, “Britain is monitored by 4 million CCTV cameras … There is one CCTV camera for every 14 people in the UK”. “These are not targeted at any particular individual but store information in anticipation of possible use at some future point”. In many cities people are filmed over 100 times a day. When I talked to people about the immense number of CCTV cameras in public places and my bad feelings about them, the general answer was that the cameras were needed because Great Britain had such a high rate of criminality and violence. This had also been the reason for establishing the cameras all over Britain. However, there is no evidence that the number of crimes having been committed or the fear of crime have diminished since the use of CCTV. Despite this fact, CCTV has not been questioned in public, due to the fact that most people are not well informed about it, “‘a general unquestioning assumption that CCTV works’” and very positive official publicity of CCTV. The small impact on Britain’s criminality rates makes it possible to question this surveillance project, which probably is an important factor in the British government’s domestic spending.

Not only on the side of the criminal CCTV does not seem to work, but there are also some negative implications on the side of the witnesses. CCTV creates the illusion of safety. Thus, if people witness a crime, the impulse of intervening is reduced. People tend to think that there is someone watching who will call the police. In fact, due to the large number of CCTV cameras, the monitors are not being watched regularly. However, besides its ineffectiveness, another aspect is very important. Despite the widespread slogan ‘nothing to hide, nothing to fear’, the knowledge of being observed changes people’s behaviour – even if it is only unconsciously. This is a fact proven in psychological experiments. Already the British philosopher Jeremy Bentham has described this effect in his utopia of the Panopticon. For the French philosopher Michel Foucault this image later became the embodiment of exercise of state power.

Another very important aspect is the questioning of individual privacy. Even if one has nothing to hide, it is very legitimate to not want other people to know where one is going and whom one is meeting with. There is also a danger lying in CCTV surveillance. It has already blurred the boundary of privacy in the name of security. Having already crossed this line, it becomes easy to enlarge the possibilities and thus the power of public surveillance. There are no sufficient legal boundaries limiting the use of CCTV. The Liberty report states that “‘[s]urveillance therefore seems to be capable of abuse, in terms of unjustified harassment – especially to those from minority communities’”.

One example is the introduction of CCTV in primary schools, which was done in 2008. A German newspaper asked: “And what about the surveillance of the youngest pupils? Do we really need recordings of four-year-old which could be used in court?” Another alarming example is a pilot project executed in Portsmouth: Cameras of the type “Perceptrak”, produced by the company Smart CCTV have been installed. The company promises that those cameras will not only help in solving crimes which have already been committed, but they will help to prevent crimes by detecting suspicious behaviour. According to the company’s website, the camera is able to detect 18 different types of suspicious behaviour. If two or more types are combined, the system reports this by showing the suspicious object or person in a red circle on the monitors in the control centre. The personnel then have to decide whether or not the observed situation might lead to the commitment of a crime.

Other examples are the combination of the two main types of surveillance, mass and targeted surveillance, by “‘data mining’ or ‘profiling’”. This becomes problematic when the profiles are composed of ethnic or religious criteria, because it puts national security very close to institutionalized racism. This whole issue turns Great Britain, which is the mother land of democracy, into a surveillance society. The NGO Privacy International rated Great Britain as a state in which violation of privacy had an “endemic” character, just besides Russia, China, Malaysia and Singapore on the top of the list containing 37 countries.

In Germany, the government tries hard to establish more public surveillance in form of CCTV, databases and so forth. I think this is a global and very serious phenomenon of which Great Britain is the precursor.
